The Spanish CO2 Technology Platform (PTECO2) has warned that Spain has great potential to capture and store CO2, but lacks a clear strategy to deploy these technologies, which puts it at a disadvantage compared to other European countries.
Spain has more than 100 deep saline aquifers suitable for storing CO2, located in areas such as the Ebro and Duero basins.
Carbon capture is crucial to reduce 20% of industrial emissions, those that cannot be mitigated by renewable energies. The captured CO2 could be used to produce synthetic fuels and other industrial products.
The PTECO2 report points out that CO2 capture is vital to meet European climate targets, which envisage storing between 400 and 450 million tons of CO2 annually by 2050.
Spain, already responsible for 10% of the European Union's emissions that are difficult to mitigate, will need to accelerate the implementation of these technologies to decarbonize industry.
